14: Deb Turns Green, by Lady Deb

MURDER AND MAYHEM AT CHERRY CREEK
EPISODE 14
BY: LADY DEB

Deb Turns Green

Lady Deb was in the middle of the most beautiful Dream involving herself, Elvis Presley, (God could that man ever move!) and Rickey Nelson. It was a reoccurring Dream, thank goodness. It would have been very upsetting to have been awakened otherwise by the commotion outside.

Deb, wiping the sleep from her eyes crossed to the windows and peered at the chaos below. Deputy Beau was pulling Judd from his old pickup. The statue of Colonel Faulk had speared the roof of the pick up! Judd had wrecked another police car. There had not been this much excitement since Lady Deb arrived at Cherry Creek.

Just as she begins to turn away from the scene below, out of the corner of her eye something not quite right catches her attention. All of the locals have gathered around the accident. Cadlin and Scotty are there of course. But across the street, just watching … is a man in a dark suit. He looks familiar to Deb, but not from around here. He seems to sense someone watching him and looks around nervously before slipping off into the shadows behind the corner drugstore. Strange, Deb thinks as she turns away and quickly gets dressed in pedal pushers and a white blouse. She pulls her hair back with a scarf and is on her way out the door.

Sheriff Pat is just finishing coffee and pie with Miss Dolly. Deb thinks it strange that he be in here with all of the commotion outside but, it’s none of her business. Deb always tries to wait until the pair has their lunch before interrupting but this is a special case.“I need coffee!”

Miss Dolly smiles up at Lady Deb and points to the pot, “help yourself.”

Deputy Beau walks in ashen faced, “We got us a body sheriff.” Without another word the two walk out the door.

Deb pours the hot coffee down her throat and darts outside just after the pair. Looking around she spots Cadlin and Scotty, if anyone knows what’s going on it would be those two. The gossip is flying as she makes her way toward the two. If one were to believe what one hears there are three bodies at Judd’s place.

Deb reaches the pair at last and grabs Cadlin’s shoulder “What is going on?”

“Judd fished a body out at the fishin’ hole.”

    “Dead?”

“That’s normally what it means when somebody says they found a body.”

“The same fishing hole where the three of us fell in last week?”

    “Yep”

“I think I’m gona be sick” Deb says bending over “Who was it?”

“Gawd Deb, you expect me to know ever'thing?"

Deb stands back up, still a bit green around the gills, "You normally do! Sometimes I think Cherry Creek’s grapevine stems from your head."

Even Scotty laughed at that one. “I swear, I don’t know nuthin. Me and Scotty was just goin to Abbey’s for lunch, wanna come along?”

“Espresso, sure, but I don’t know about the lunch yet.” The three walk off toward Fat Sally’s and slowly the people disappear from main Street one by one, or in pairs until as Sheriff Pat wished for, Cherry Creek was once more in a state of “calm confusion.”
